contractionofoande.Somemodernlinguistsregardittobealsopresentimpera-
tivemiddleandpassive,althoughitistheformdidosowhichisconsideredto
betheregularatticform.Accordingtothisinterpretation,didouwouldbethe
resultofcontractionoftwoo:didou<didoso.SuchistheopinionofSmythand
Goodwin10notsupportedbyanyotherscholar.Theybelievetheformtooccurin
poetry,andadditionally,Smythconsidersitalateform.Smyth’sopinionmight

,p.372,12)wecanfindacontracteddidouformwhichmaybecon-
sideredmiddlewhentakingintoaccounttheregularformofpresentimperative
middleandpassivedidosooccurringinthesamesentence:

“[…]drinksomecoldwaterfromtimetotime(literally:giveyourselfadrink)

Inthiscasethesubjectisboththedoeroftheactivityanditsobject.Mostprob-
ablyitistheonlyexampleofdidosoimperativeinpreservedtexts.Therearecon-
siderablymoreexamplesofdidouform.Itisdifficulttoestablishwhetheramong
themtherearethoseregardedbySmythandGoodwinaspoeticmiddleformsas
thescholarsfailtoprovideinformationregardingtheirplaceofoccurrence.
