Abstract:Theaimofthisarticleistoanalysethedidouform,whichisregardedbytwocontemporary
scholarstobethepoeticformofpresentimperativemiddleandpassive.Thepaperpresentsopinions
ofHerodian,anancientgrammarian,aswellasthoseofmodernlinguistsresearchingthebehaviour
ofintervocalicsigmain-sosuffixofpresentimperativemiddleandpassive.Thecriticalanalysisof
thoseopinionshasbeencontrastedwiththeformspresentinthepoetryofarchaicandclassicalperiod.

Thesspirantoccurringbetweenvowelswouldusuallydisappear.According
tomodernlinguists,intheformsofsecondpersonsingularofindicativi
praesentismedii-passivi,indicativiimperfectimedii-passiviandimperativiprae-
sentismedii-passiviofverbswithathematicconjugation,thespirantwasrestored
bywayofanalogy(e.g.tiqesai,śtiqeso,tiqesoor†stasai,†staso).The
sigmaalsousedtodisappearbutwasreintroducedbywayofanalogyinformsof
perfectindicativeandpluperfectmiddleandpassive.1
