Ifcollectionsaredispersed,theyarealsodisparate,reflectingallthevariouseldsof
researchandstudytobefoundinDijon.However,thisheterogeneouscharacterisbal-
ancedbyacertaincoherence,givenbythefactthatalltheseinstrumentshavemetthe
needsofresearchandteachingatcertaintimes.AtFrenchuniversities,veryfewpeople
areinvolvedintheeldofscientificheritage.Specificscientificandtechnicalstaffare
almostnon-existent.Teachersorengineersinvariousdepartmentsareofteninchargeof
thecollections.Theyareoftennotclearlyidentifiednorrecognisedbytheinstitution.In
Dijon,actionsregardingscientificheritagearecentralisedina“MissionCultureScien-
tifique”oftwopersons(acuratorandapersoninchargeofcollectingandlisting).They
havetocoordinate,protectandenhancethecollections.Asaconsequence,itisoften
difficulttomanageboththeconservationandtheoutreachstrategiesatthesametime.
Nevertheless,wenoticethateldworkandthemethodologyusedwhilecollectingand
listingtheobjectsobligeustothinkaboutvalorisationatthesametime.
Anne-MarieDelauneunderlinestheimportanceof,“adynamicnetworkofpartners
fortheprotectionofscientificheritage,partnerswhoarealsodeterminedtosetupand
animateexhibitionprojects”.Asmallteamwithoutapermanenttheatreforscientific
collectionsreallyneedstondpartnershipstoexistandtotightenthenetwork.Alotof
possibilitiesexistandreinforcethemethodologicalaspectsaswellasevents.
Strategiesofdissemination:theimportanceofpartnerships
Theconceptofnomadismisextremelylarge,andsomekeyfactorstosuccessin
outreachstrategiesneedtobeidentified.Amongstthempartnerships,goodlocationsand
strategicmonitoringofrelevantactivitieswithintheinstitutionwillbediscussed.
Nationalpartnership:
Togivelegitimacyandvisibilitytoouractions,weneededtobeinvolvedinabigger
institution.InsigninganagreementwiththeMuséedesArtsetMétiersforthePATSTEC
programme,weagreedtoapplythemethodologydefinedbythenationalmission.This
methodologyimpliesthecollectionofinformationonthetechnicalpropertiesandprin-
ciplesoffunctioningofthescientificinstruments,aswellasmakingenquiriesaboutthe
contextoftheiruse,andresearchinwhichtheseinstrumentswereinvolved.
Goingintolaboritoriesinordertosensitisepeopletotheimportanceofrecentscien-
tificheritage,tobeincontactwithusersandtostudytheobjectsinsitu,intheiroriginal
context,obligeustoworkinaverydifferentmannerfromthatwewouldadoptifwe
hadalltheobjectscentralisedinstorageareas.Byencouragingtherecordingofacer-
tainmemoryofresearchersregardingtheirscientificheritage,thismethodallowsusto
replacetheseobjectsinalargercontextandgivesusideasatthisfirststepforfutureval-
orisation.Indeed,thestoriestheytellusgivedepthtotheobjects,andarearichsource
ofcontexttoattractingthepublic.
