Dispersedscientificcollectionsorhowtoovercometheabsenceofaper-
manentspaceofexhibition?
IncollaborationwithAnne-MarieDelaunewithinthePATSTECnationalnetworkin
France,wewantedtochallengeandillustratetheconceptofnomadismrelatingtove
yearsofexperienceattheUniversitédeBourgogne.Amuseumisruninastrictandclear
frame,andoffersmanyfacilitiesforconservationandvalorisation.InDijon,however,
wedon’thaveamuseumatouruniversity.VeryfewuniversitiesinFranceownscientific
museums(e.g.Strasbourg).
Afterveyearsofcopingwiththesituation,wehaveobservedthatthisisnotadisas-
terand,onthecontrary,offersrealfreedomofaction,withincertainlimits.
Nothavingamuseum,howcanweovercometheabsenceofapermanentexhibition
space?Howdoesthisissueobligeustothinkofdisplayinginadifferentway?Andto
acertainextent,howdofieldwork,artefactcollectionandinventoryinfluenceourout-
reachstrategies?
Nomadismallowstheexpectationofdisplayandexhibitionstobemetbyfollowing
theparameterslistedandproposedbyAnne-MarieDelaune,andcanalsohelptofreeus
fromtheconstraintofaxed-butpotentiallyfossilised-location.
Specificitiesofdispersedcollections
Dijon,likeLimoges,isaregionalcapitalwithapopulationof160,000.Theuniver-
sity,withnearly30,000students,wasfoundedin1723,and300yearsofhistoryexplains
whytheuniversityownsscientificcollections.Thegrowthoftheuniversityfromasmall
locationinthecentreofthecitytoamoderncampusontheoutskirtsofthecityhasledto
scientificinstrumentsbeingscatteredthroughoutvariouslocations.Moreover,animpor-
tantpartofthecollectionsarestillbeingusedinclassesorlaboratories,andcannotbe
entirelymobilisedforconservationandcontemplation.Furthermore,theseinstruments
cannotbedisplayedwithoutrealofeffortofcontextualisation,particularlyconcerning
recentscientificheritage,whichisquitecomplexusingalotofelectronicsandoften
enclosedinboxestohidetheprocess.
