InoneofthechaptersofBookVofNicomacheanEthicsdevotedtothecon-
ceptofmutualreciprocity(toantipeponthos),Aristotleclaimsthatreciprocity
(aboveallfortheservicereceived,butperhapsalsofortheharmsuffered)is
aconditionofmaintainingthenationalcommunity.Therefore,hesays:“This
iswhytheygiveaprominentplacetothetempleoftheGracestopromote
therequitalofservices;forthisischaracteristicofgraceweshouldserve
inreturnonewhohasshowngracetous,andshouldanothertimetakethe
initiativeinshowingit”

.AGreeknamecharis,whomtheCharitesowe
theirname,canmeaneitherserviceorgratitude.Theabove-quotedsentence
appears,however,inhisbookonjustice,whichasafundamentofspecial
socialdutiesismostoftendistinguishedfromgratitude.Hence,aquestion
ariseswhatrelationisestablishedbetweenthreevirtues:reciprocity,grat-
itudeandjusticeappearinginAristotle’swork.Inotherwords,whatthe
meaningofthisdutyof“reciprocity”(antapodosis)was,whichwasbeing
referredtowhileerectingthetempleoftheCharitesinaprominentplace?
