Inhisattempttoanchorthetreatymorepreciselyinchronology,Peekfound
anumberofsimilaritiesbetweenthetreatyandagroupofinscriptionsdatedat
theturnofthesixthandfhcenturies.Someofthemsupposedlyresembledthe
treatyowingtosuchfeaturesasanepsilonwithaprolongedverticalhasta,acrook-
edpi,azigzagsigma(=writteninfiveormorestrokes),andanacute-angled
rho.Teappearanceinca.475BCEoffour-barsigmaandofepsilonwithashort
verticalhastalimitedbytransversalhastaswouldconstituteaterminusantequem
forthetreaty.

Telattersetofargumentsisparticularlyquestionable,onaccountofboth
povertyofthecomparativematerialanditsverycharacter.Analmostcomplete
lackofpublicinscriptions,

togetherwiththenotoriousSpartanilliteracy,callsfor
refrainingfromcategoricaljudgements.Itisinfactcharacteristicthat,whenever
wearedealingwithwell-datedSpartaninscriptionsoftheclassicalperiod,weare
constantlysurprisedbyarchaic(orrather:archaising)forms.AsPeekhimselfhas
noted-althoughwithoutdrawingrelevantconclusionsfromtheobservation-
