Theappearanceofamuchhigherlevelofchildlessnessisaparticularlypuz-
zlingphenomenon,especiallygiventhatpeoplewhoclaimtohavenointention
ofhavingchildrenareveryrareinPoland(Kotowskaetal.2008).Ontheother
hand,accordingtosomerecentprojections,asmanyas22%-25%ofPolish
womenbornin1975mayremainchildless(Sobotka2004,p.145).
2.1.2.Nuptialityandchildbearing
InordertocompletethepictureofPolishfertilitytrends,wewillbrieflycon-
sidernuptiality,asmarriageisverycloselyrelatedtochildbearinginPoland.In
fact,somescholarsarguethat,inthiscontext,fertilitypatternscannotbeunder-
stoodwithoutanalysingnuptialityissues(Kowalska1999),andaverysimilarset
offactorsinfluencethedecisiontomarryandhavechildren(Frątczak1999).
UnlikeinmostEuropeancountries,inPolandthelargemajorityofchildren(83%,
CentralStatisticalOfce2006a)areborntolegallymarriedcouples.Althoughthe
numberofextramaritalbirthshastripledoverthelast25years(from5.8%in1989
to17.1%in2004),itisstillverylowincomparisontoothercountries(Table2.2).
