liccultureshouldbealsoemphasisedasanaspectthatdistinguishesPolandfrom
othertransitionalcountries.Infact,asfarastheideationaldimensioniscon-
cerned,PolandinmanyrespectsresemblesotherCatholicandreligiouscountries
(e.g.,Italy,Ireland)morethantheotherpost-socialistones(Siemieńska2004).
Generally,theculturalheritageofPolandshouldratherencouragechildbearing.
Moreover,theeconomictransformationhasbeenquitesuccessfulinPolandrela-
tivetootherpost-socialistcountries(Balcerowicz2000,Berend2000,Sztompka
2000).Bothfactorsshouldhavebuffered,atleasttosomeextent,thefertility
decline.Itis,however,bynomeanssmallerthaninothercountriesoftheregion.
Thisstateofaffairsalsoraisesquestionsaboutfuturedemographicdevelop-
mentsinPoland.Thecountry’sentryintotheEuropeanUnioninMay2004
broughtwithittheprospectofevengreatereconomicdevelopment.Canwe
expectthat,witheconomicgrowth,fertilityrateswillincrease?Orwillthe
ideationalchangeaccelerateinPoland,supplantingtraditional,familisticvalues
andcausinglowbirthratestocontinue?Or,alternatively,willsome“middle
path”betaken?Toaddressthesequestions,weneedtounderstandthenatureof
thecurrentchanges.
Ourgoalistounderstandthiswidevarietyoffactorsandtheirinterplayin
shapingthedemographicregimeofthelowest-lowfertilityinPoland.Demo-
graphicliteratureprovidesextensivelistsofeconomic,institutional,andcultural
influencesthatareresponsibleforchangesinchildbearingpatterns.Yetnotheo-
reticalapproachhasmanagedtoincorporatealloftheseinfluencesinacompre-
hensivemanner.Ithasbeenarguedintheliteraturethatmicro-levelstudiesand
thecreationofademographic‘modelofaman’couldaddressthatproblemand
bringalltheelementstogether(deBruijn1999,McNicoll1992,Willekens1992,
vandeKaa1996).Wefollowthisrecommendation.Wearguethataneffective
wayofinvestigatingthechangesoffertilitypatternsistoexploretheprocesses
behindindividualreproductivechoices.Wedoubtwhetheritisevenpossibleto
fullycomprehendthedemographicchangewithouthavingunderstoodhowindi-
vidualsformandrealisetheirfertilityintentions.Therefore,weinvestigatehow
peoplerecognise,interpret,anddealwithvariousfactorsinthecourseofmaking
theirchildbearingchoices.Ourgeneralresearchquestionsarethefollowing:
Whataretheprocessescontributingtoindividualreproductivechoices,
which,atthemacrolevel,arereectedinthesubstantialdropinbirthrates
inthecurrentcontext?Andhowarethesechoicesexperiencedandjustied
byyoungPoles?
Ourstudyisnotaboutmeasuringtheeffectsofvariousfactors.Werather
wanttogainanin-depthunderstandingofhowtheyareperceived,defined,and
