Manisfirstofallthe<gloryofGod’:<GloriaDeivivenshomo’,inthecel-
ebratedwordsofSaintIrenaeus,whichmightalsobetranslated:<theglory
ofGodisformantobealive’.Itcouldbesaidthathereweencounter
theloftiestdefinitionofman:thegloryofGodisthecommongoodofall
thatexists;thecommongoodofthehumanrace.Yes!Manisacommon
good:acommongoodofthefamilyandofhumanity
,ofindividualgroups
andofdiferentcommunities.”13Ofcoursetheword“man”usedinthis
contextreferstothehumanbeing,andthewholequoteisakindofglo-
rificationofhumanityasthecentralvalueofsocietywithinthebroader
contextofGod’screation.Consequently
,sincethehumanbeingisthe
commongoodofall,thenthewaysocietytreatseverynewbornchildcon-
stitutesatestofwhetheritcanrecognizethecommongoodproperlyand
whetheritcanliveuptoitsidealbyacceptingeachhumanlifewell.John
PaulIIoferedthiskindofatestorameasuringrodfortheadequateway
oftreatingonepersonbyanother.InhisApostolicExhortation“Familiaris
consortio”hewroteasfollows:“Concernforthechild,evenbeforebirth,
fromthefirstmomentofconceptionandthenthroughouttheyearsof
infancyandyouth,istheprimaryandfundamentaltestoftherelation-
shipofonehumanbeingtoanother.”14Wemaysaythatthisisthetestof
agoodsociety:theacceptanceandgoodtreatmentofeverynewhumanis
theproofoftheproperattitudetowardsothersandtheadequatecondi-
tionofsociety

Thesameconcernsthesocialtreatmentofparentsandfamilies.Since
theyformtheclosestcirclesfortheirchildrenandwhentheytakecareof
thechildrenwell,theirtasksshouldreceiveproperrecognitionfromthe
societyatlargethatbenefitsfromparentalcareofthemembersofnew
generations.MaryAnnGlendonclaimsthat“whenmothersandfathers
raisetheirchildrenwell,theyarenotjustdoingsomethingforthemselves
andtheirownchildren,butforallofus.Governments,privateemploy-
ers,andfellowcitizenswouldallhavetorecognizethatweallowean
enormousdebttoparentswhodoagoodjobraisingtheirchildrenunder
today’sdifcultconditions.There’ssomethingheroicabouttheeveryday
sacrificesthatpeoplehavetomakethesedaysjusttodotherightthing
