Inthreecases,asalreadymentioned,Iselfishlylookatwhatishap-
peningwithmyneighbours:archivistsandanthropologists,whohave
alotincommonwithhistorians.Iobservethearchivists)discussionon
thedisciplinaryidentityofarchivalscience.Idealwiththisdiscussion
because,obviously,itconcernstheresearchsubjectofarchivalstudies
andconcernsthearchiveandarchives–potentialhistoricalsources.In
thecaseofLudwikStomma)santhropologicalandhistoricalresearch
proposal,itisimportantthathedevelopsanthropologicalandhistorical
researchconceptsinreferencetoFernandBraudelandhisglobalhisto-
ry.25Stomma)sproposalinterestsmeintermsofmeaningandhistory.
ThesecondcaseconcernstheongoingdiscussiononGeertz)sinterpre-
tativeanthropology.Itattractsmyattentioninrelationtotheissueof
modernismandpostmodernismastheoreticalmodelsofsocio-cultural
research.TheideaofGeertz)santhropologicalresearchinterestsme,not
somuchasatheoreticalideaaddressedtoanthropologists,butasanop-
portunityforresearchthatwouldfitintotheso-calledmilitantmiddle
groundbetweenmodernismandpostmodernism.
IlikethephrasetakenfromGeertzthatsomethinginscienceisdone
(onlyfortoday).Inadditiontothefreedomofinquiryandcriticism,it
expressesitsaxiologicalassumptions:self-reflectionandself-criticism.26
