Next,herananintelligenceoutpostcode-named“Brzoza”[Eng.:“Birchtree”]
onGermanterritory,whileintheyears1924-1925,heheadedthe“Zachód”
[Eng.:“West”]Sectioninthe2ndDepartment.Hisbadhealthcausedhimto
saygoodbyetomilitaryservice.Inturn,hebecametheeditor-in-chiefof
“PolskaZbrojna”and“GłosPomorski”
,aMemberofParliament,anemployee
oftheMinistryoftheInteriorandPolishRadio.HewasnotinPolandatthe
outbreakofSecondWorldWarandasofOctober1939,heworkedforthe
Polishintelligenceserviceagain.Hemanaged,amongothers,theevacuation
ofPolishofcersthroughSpainandMorocco,wassubsequentlycapturedand
arrested,buttheVichy-Frenchdidnotmanagetoprovehisspyingactivity.He
spentsevenandahalfmonthsinprisonfortheillegalpossessionofaradio
transmitter.In1942,hewentońtoCanada.Tere,untiltheendofthewar,he
managedthe“Manchester”intelligenceoutpost.HediedinCanadain1977.
Te“Estezet”documentsalsoshedadińerentlightonwell-knownfigures
ofPolishscience,cultureandpolitics,ofenunfortunatelyshowingthedark
sideoftheirbiographies.Prof.OskarLangehasalreadybeenmentioned,but
thearchivalfilespointtomoreorsometimeslessdangerousflirtationswith
thecommunists,fromrecklessspeechesanddeclarationstofullcooperation,
foundinthefilesofJanKiepura,JulianTuwim,BolesławGebertandothers.
KonradWrzos,knownmainlyasthemostoutstandingPolishpre-warreporter,
turnedouttobeagentno.1315a.k.a”.Spryciarz”[Eng.:“TeDodger”],an
extremelyimportantbutarbitraryanddifculttocontrolagent.Hisfriend,
andatthetimemanagerofthe“Salvador”intelligencestation,Lieutenant
ColonelStefanFabiszewski“Steńal”wrotethefollowingaboutWrzos:

hasthegoodtraitthatnoonesuspectshimofholdinganintelligenceposition.
