LondonhandedoverbyColonelStanisławGanototheBritishSIShavebeen
sincelost.Britishinstitutions,repeatedlyquestioned,usuallyreportoftheir
destructionatadifcultpost-wartime.Itisknownthatthe2ndDepartment
itselfselectivelydestroyedtherecords,thedisclosureofwhichcouldhave
endangeredtheofcersandcollaboratorsofPolishintelligencethroughout
theworld.Tereis,however,aconvictionthatsomewhereinLondonthere
isanundiscoveredhidingplacewithanotherportionofthearchive,which
wasorganizedbyLt.Col.LeonBortnowski,butwhereitmightbelocated
orwhathappenedtoitremainsunknown.Someofthedocumentssurvived
indispersion,inprivatecollections,askeptbytheofcersthemselves.With
time,theseweresenttohistoricalandmuseuminstitutions,suchastheJózef
PiłsudskiInstituteorthePolishInstituteandGeneralSikorskiMuseum.Te
“Estezet”archive,almostentirelysavedbyChodacki,isthereforeinvaluable
asthelargestcompactsetofallcollectionsconcerningPolishintelligence.
Tehopethatsomethingcomparablewillbefound,appearedlastyearwhen
MichałSokolnicki)sarchivewasrecoveredinAnkara.
Te“Estezet”collectionconsistsofthousandsofpagesoffascinatingreading,
showingtheeverydaylifeoftheSecondRepublic)smilitaryintelligence
inbothAmericas,comprisingalmostacompletedocumentationoffour
yearsofworkbyagroupofofcersandcivilians.Itcoversaspectrumof
issuesdocumentingthefunctioningoftheintelligenceorganizationandits
extraordinaryemployees.Tefollowinghavebeenpreserved:organizational
instructions,organizationalreportsof“Estezet”anditssubordinatefacilities,
personaldataofofcersandcivilianemployees,recordsofagentsandpostings,
asignificantpartofmailcorrespondence,instructionsforthefacility)stwo
codebooksusedatthepostings(“666”and“777”),personalfilesofpersons
beingverified,includingthosesuspectedofcooperatingwiththecommunists,
informationconcerningGermanandAustrianpoliticiansinbothAmericas,
materialsrelatingtointelligenceworkintheAmericas,anddocumentationof
cooperationwithAlliedintelligence.
