Attheendof1830,HermannreturnedtoSzczecinandstart-

edworkingasanassistantteacher(Hillfslehrer)attheRoyal

SeminarintegratedwiththegymnasiuminSzczecin.Inthesame

year,hepassedanexaminancientlanguagesandmathematics.

HethenresumedhistheologicalstudiesandinMay1834he

passedhisﬁrstexam.Overtheperiodofthenexttwoyears,he

workedasmathematicsteacherattheBerlinIndustrialSchool,

wherehemetJakobSteiner.However,theBerlinenvironmentdid

notsuithim.HereturnedtoSzczecinandstartedworkingatthe

OttovonBambergMunicipalSchool(Ottoschule;equivalentof

aRealschule,butwithoutLatin),wherehetaughtmathematics,

chemistry,Germanandreligion.Heworkedthereuntil1842.

Inthemeantime,hisfatheralsopursuedscientiﬁcworkandin

1827publishedhisdissertationontheconceptsofpurenumber

theory.Thedissertationisinterestinginthatitissimilartothe

introductiontotheﬁrstworkbyHermann,Ausdehnugslehre,

publishedin1844.

In1839,HermannG.Grassmannpassedhisexamintheology

withaVeryGoodgrade.Oneyearlater,hesubmittedhisﬁrst

scientiﬁcpapertothecommissioninBerlin,thusobtainingan

independentspecialisationandtherighttoteachlecturesinmath-

ematics,physics,mineralogyandchemistry.In1841,hewrote

twobooks:Zarysgramatykiniemieckiej(OutlineofGerman

Grammar)andPrzewodniknaukiniemieckiej(GuidetoGerman

Science)(withhisbrother,Gustaw).In1842,heabandonedhis

careerintheologyandbegantodevelopandcreatenewscientiﬁc

disciplines.

Inthesameyear,hestartedafamily.Accordingtohistorians,the

Grassmannshadelevenchildren(sevenofwhomlivedtoadult-

hood):Justus(bornin1851)wasamathematicianandadirector

oftheFriedrichWilhelmRealGymnasium,atwhichhisfather

worked;Max(bornin1852)tookaroadtomathematicsthrough

theology,wasaprofessoratMary’sGymnasium;HermannErnst

(bornin1857)wasaLatinteacherinHalleandthenbecame

aprofessorofmathematicsattheUniversityinGiessen;Ludolf

(bornin1861)wasthechiefphysicianinFlensburg,andRichard

(bornin1864)wasafullprofessorofmechanicalengineeringat

theSchoolofTechnologyinKarlsruhe.Theotherchildrenwere:

Emma(bornin1850),Agnes(bornin1855),Helmuth(bornin

1856),Luisa(bornin1858),Klara(bornin1866)andKonrad

(bornin1867).
