So,itwasneitherAdhémarJeanClaudeBareédeSaint-Venant,
norWilliamRowanHamilton,norevenJosiahWillardGibbswho
inventedvectorcalculus(thelatterdiscoveredGrassmann’swork
aslateas1877).Inanycase,Gibbswrote:“(…)inmechanics,
kinematics,astronomy,physicsorcrystallography,Grassmann’s
pointanalysiswillrarelybewanted”.
OneofthefirstmathematicianstoappreciateGrassmann’s
workswasHermannHankelin1867(Theoriederkomplexen
Zahlensysteme).In1878,WilliamKingdonClifordofthe
JohnsHopkinsUniversitywroteinthepaper“Applicationof
Grassmann’sAlgebra”,publishedinthefirstissueofAmerican
JournalofMathematicsof1878:“(…)Imay,perhaps,therefore
bepermittedtoexpressmyprofoundadmirationofthatextraor-
dinarywork,andmyconvictionthatitsprincipleswillexercise
avastinfluenceuponthefutureofmathematicalscience”.
HermannG.Grassmannwasforgottenforalmost150years,until
theconferenceinLieschowonRügenIslandin1994,heldforthe
anniversaryofthepublishingofhisfirstwork,Ausdehnungslehre.
Nowadays,heisconsideredasoneofthegreatestthinkersof
the19thcenturyscience.Themathematiciansthemselvesassert
thathismathematicalachievementsarenotyetfullyknownand
properlyunderstood.
Thisbookusesthefollowinglayout:chapters1and2arethe
basicsofvectorandtensorcalculus.Thepracticalapplicationof
vectorcalculusispresentedinchapters3and4,usingcalculations
relatedtoselectedproblemsofkinematics(planemotionand
sphericalmotion),andtensorcalculuswasusedtocalculatethe
momentsofinertiaoflines,planarfiguresandsolids(chapter5).
