studentsfromtheInstituteofEthnologyandCulturalAnthropologyoftheJagiel-

lonianUniversityintheyear2000insouthernPoland.Aperegrinationofacopy

oftheimageofOurLadyofCzęstochowawashappeningconcurrentlywiththe

interviews.3Additionally,onehundredwrittenquestionnairesweredistributed,

completedandcollectedfromrandomlychosenpeoplelivingalloverPoland.In

additiontotheinterviewsandquestionnaires,Imadeuseofparticipantobserva-

tionsduringreligiouseventsinvolvingtheimageofOurLadyofCzęstochowa(at

theJasnaGóraMonastery,duringperegrinationofthecopyoftheimageinvari-

ouspartsofPoland,duringpilgrimages).Atthetimetheﬁeldresearchwascon-

ducted,Igatheredavarietyofmaterials,suchaswrittenentriesinvotivebooks,

religioussongsandpoetry,popularreligiousmagazines,devotionalprintouts,and

iconographicaldocumentation;Itreattheseasimportantethnographicsources

revealingvariousaspectsofcontemporarypietyconnectedwiththeimageofOur

LadyofCzęstochowa.

Analyzingmaterialfromtheﬁeldresearch,Ichosetofocusonfourtopics:

storiesoftheimage’sorigin,thesymbolismofthewoundsvisibleonMary’s

face,theconceptoftheQueenofthenation,andthepresenceofOurLadyof

Częstochowainlivedreligion.Usingcontemporaryethnographicresearch,Icon-

structedeachchapterrecallingolder,historicaltracesofcontemporarymythsand

symbolsattachedtoOurLadyofCzęstochowa.Ofcoursemychoiceoftopics

doesnotcoverthewholecomplicatedphenomenonofthecultofOurLadyof

Częstochowa.Thereisstillmoreworktobedoneparticularlywiththeissueof

pilgrimagesdoneon-footeachsummertoCzęstochowa.Thesenumerouspil-

grimswhocomefromvarious(sometimesremote)partsofPolandcreateaunique

religiousphenomenonincontemporaryEurope.

Inorganizingandinterpretingvariousfragmentsfrommyﬁeldmaterial,Ihave

introducedthetermsgreatandsmallstories.Thesetermsaremeanttodistinguish

betweendecidedlycollectiveaspectsofthecultofOurLadyofCzęstochowa

(great)andmoreindividualdimensionofthiscult(small).Whilethegreatsto-

ryemphasizesthenationaldimensionofOurLadyofCzęstochowaandisbuilt

aroundthetitleoftheQueenofthenation,thesmallstoriesarebasedonvery

intensive,individualreligiousexperiencesandmostlyemphasizematernaland

humanaspectsofMary.

Finally,Ishouldalsoexplaincertaintermsappearinginthetitleofthebook,

namely"theimageandtheﬁgureofOurLadyofCzęstochowa.”Thebookandits

titlerevealacertaindualityencodedintheconceptoftheholyimageinChris-

tianity.Thepicture(material,panel,paintedboard,statueetc.)isseenandexpe-

riencedbyareligiouspersonastheimageoftheholyﬁgure,representing(i.e.

makingpresent)thisholyﬁgure.Thisparticularrelationship–ofimageandﬁgure
