Introduction
TheimageofOurLadyofCzęstochowaisthemostfamousandthemostvenerated
holyimageinPoland.IncontemporaryPolishsocietytheimageisakindofacul-
turalicon,instantlyrecognizableandconnectedwithpopularsymbolicandmyth-
ologicalmeanings.1CharacteristicsoftheimagetheoutlineoftheVirginwith
Childonherlap,thedarkfaceofMary,andthescarsvisibleonherrightcheek
areallverywellknowninPoland.Duringthecommunistperiod(1945–1989)
theimageservedasoneofthemostpopularsymbolsofresistancecombining
religiousandnationaldimensions.Nowadays,countlesscopiesoftheoriginal
imagecanbeseennotonlyinchurchesbutalsoonstreets,abovebuildinggates,
inshops,cafeterias,inpublicplaceslikeofficesandlibraries,orinpublictrans-
portationaswellasinprivatecarswheredriversoftenhangitabovethesteering
wheel.
Thisbookisananthropologicalinterpretationoftheimmensepopularityof
theimageofOurLadyofCzęstochowainPoland.Itdealswithreligious,aswell
asnational,aspectsofthecult.Mymainfocusisonvariouspopularbeliefs,myths
andritualsconnectedwiththeimageofOurLadyofCzęstochowaandhowthese
beliefs,mythsandritualsappearinpopularPolishcontemporaryCatholicism.
Theethnographicdataforthebookisdrawnfromeldresearchcarriedoutin
severaldifferentpartsofPolandduringtheyears1999–2002.2Themostimportant
partofthefieldresearchwasbasedoninterviewsconductedbymeandagroupof

moninPoland.ToalargeextentthisisduetoapredominanceoftheCatholicreligion.Con-
temporaryofficialpollsshowthatmorethan90percentofPolishsocietyself-identifyas"Cat-
holic”oratleastnominallyconnectthemselveswiththeCatholicChurch.However,itshould
bestressedthatthesituationismorecomplicatedandattitudestowardCatholicismvaryeven
amongthosecountedas"Catholics.”Here,Iwouldliketoemphasizethatthepopularsym-
bolismofOurLadyofCzęstochowaoftentranscendsvariousreligiousattitudesandappears
notonlyonreligiousbutalsoonculturalandsociallevels.Thatiswhyisseemsappropriateto
applyEricR.Wolf’sterm"mastersymbol”whichheintroducedtocharacterizetheMexi-
cansymbolismoftheVirginofGuadalupetotheimageofOurLadyofCzęstochowainthe
