saidthatlanguageteacherproximityinawaynecessitatestheappropriate
orientationandsensitivitytothelanguageteacher’sprofessionaljargon.
Thosewhocanoperateitskilfullycaninteractwithveteranteachersand
claimmembershipofthelanguageteachingprofessionmoresuccessfully.
Internallanguageproximityimpliesaslightlydifferentunderstandingof
Htalkingthetalk”.Itcandenoteanalmostexclusiveidentificationwiththe
linguisticdimensionandwiththosewhorepresentthesamediscourse,pri-
marilynativespeakers.Theideaoflanguageproximitystressesaperson’s
willingnesstoperformthejobofalanguageteacherinordertouseapar-
ticulardiscoursewhichembracesassumptions,valuesorterminologyused
bytheadmiredgroupmembers.Formanylanguageteachers,theirjobis
stillanoccupationtheyhavealwayswishedtopursuebecauseofthecontact
withthetargetlanguagethatthisprofessionoffers.ThisHspecialrelation-
ship”withlanguageundoubtedlymakesalanguageuseraspiretoabetter
commandoflanguageandcontributestohisorheridentificationasanin-
sideramongthosewhousecorrectandappropriatelanguage.Sucharela-
tionshipwithlanguagealsoexcludesthosewhofailtosharesimilarnorms
orlanguage-relatedbehaviours.
Bycontrast,schoolproximityreferstotheidentificationwithschoolculture
andtheschoolinsiders’obligations.Itcanbesaidthateacheducationalinsti-
tutionhasitsowndistinctiveculture;yetschoolcultureingeneral,withits
teachingstrategies,assessment,curricula,learners,parents,colleagues,su-
periors,etc.,appearstobearecognizablenotioncommontoschoolsevery-
where.Thosewhoidentifywithsuchpracticesacceptthem,emulateveteran
teachers’behaviours,complywithschoolnormsandcontributethemselves
toschoolideologies.Yet,proximityinthissensebynomeansimpliestheob-
servanceofconformitytoaschool’sstructures.Individualsmayfeellessor
moreattractedtothecultureofaschool,orevennegotiatetheirnearness
ordistancetocertainaspectsoftheteachingprofession.
Anotionrelatedtotheideaofproximityisteacherpositioning.According
toHyland(2012),positioningisHbelongingontheonehandandindividual
recognitionontheother”(p.22),orinotherwords,Hhowpeoplelocate
themselvesindiscoursewheninteractingwithothers”(p.35).Theseactsof
positioningcanbeeitherperformedreflexively(self-positioning)orbyoth-
ers(other-positioning)(Correaetal.,2015).Drawingonthesedefinitions,it
