1.2.2PersonalIdentity
IncontrasttotheformationofHwe”,personalidentityisconnectedwiththe
formationofHI”.ItisdefinedbyHthosequalitiesandcharacteristicswesee
inourselveswhicharestrictlyindividual”(Augoustinosetal.,2006,p.25).It
impliesidentifyingwithpersonalgoalsandstandardswhichdifferentiatean
individualfromothersandperceivingoneselfasauniquepersonality.
Havingpresentedthebasicdistinctionsbetweenthetwo,itisworth
pointingoutthatthenotionofpersonalidentityismostunfortunatebecause
allidentitymustbesocial,andevenifitseemstobeasocial,itstilldepends
oncertainformsofsocialorganization.Therefore,somescholarsusethe
termsHsocialidentity”vs.Hindividualidentity”(Grzelak&Jarymowicz,2000,
p.117).Others,inturn,arguethatthenotionofasolelypersonalidentityis
fictional,justlikethedistinctionbetweenpersonalidentityandsocialiden-
tity(Augoustinosetal.,2006,p.25).
1.2.3ProfessionalIdentity
Howeverforcedorfictionaltheirnames,inthelightoftheabovedistinction,
thequestionofwhatprofessionalidentityisarises.Isitclosertopersonal
identity,orisitanintegralpartofsocialidentity?Inthecaseoftheteaching
profession,somescholarsreferprofessionalidentitytoteachers’conceptsor
imagesofself,somestillperceiveitintermsofteachers’roles,whileothers
perceiveitaswhatteachersfindimportantintheirwork(Beijaardetal.,
2004).Sinceitisanunclearconceptwhichencompassesalotofthings,per-
hapsBrzezińskaandAppelt’s(2004,p.13)approachseemsreasonable,in
whichprofessionalidentitycombineselementsofsocialidentityandper-
sonalidentity.Thisisbecausewhileprofessionalidentityincludespersonal
goalsandstandards,itisconnectedwiththeconstructionofHwe”,thestruc-
tureinwhichanindividualfeelsclosetopeopleofthesameprofessionand
wheretheysharenorms,values,behaviours,problems,etc.Ontheonehand,
professionalidentitycanbeunique,butontheother,itcanbebuiltthrough
socializationintocommunities,asaresultofwhichinternalself-perception
andtheexternalperceptionsofothersaresynthesized.TouseRiley’s(2003,
p.379)distinction,itisreasonabletosaythatprofessionalidentityliesbe-
tweenHself”,understoodasnumericalidentity,whichisprivate,subjective,the
locusofindividual’smemories,fundamentallydiachronic,providesasenseofcon-
tinuityandreferstowhichindividual,andHperson”associalidentity,which
ispublic,agroupmember,fundamentallysynchronic,andreferstowhatsortof
