HEDONICANDEUDAIMONISTICWELL-BEING:
INTEGRATIONOFTHEPERSPECTIVES
ASADIRECTIONFORFURTHERRESEARCH

Summary.Intheliteratureonmentalwell-being,thereisacleardivisionbetween
definingthisconceptinthehedonistictrend(ashighintensityofpositiveafect,
lowintensityofnegativeafectandsatisfactionwithlife)andeudaemonism(as
self-acceptance,positiverelationshipswithothers,asenseofmeaningandpur-
poseinlife).Meanwhile,empiricalresearchontheconvergenceofbothperspec-
tivesindicatesthatthemostaccuratewaytoconceptualizethisconstructistheir
integration.Thisarticlewillpresentthemostimportantreportsinthisfield,as
wellastheoreticalmodelswhichareaproposalforasynthesisofhedonisticand
eudaimonisticcategories.Thediscussionhighlightstheadvantagesofabroad
conceptualizationofwell-beingfortheaccuracyofpsychologicalresearchcon-
ductedinthisarea.

Introduction
Theissueofmentalwell-beingarousesunflagginginterestofpsychologistsrep-
resentingboththeinternational(Diener,Larsen,1984;Ryf,1989;Seligman,2002a,
2002b;Dieneretal.,2017)andPolish(Czapiński,1994,2015;Heszen-Niejodek,1996;
Trzebińska,2008)scientificcommunity.Thisinterestisjustifiedbytheresultsof
numerousstudiesthatindicatethegreatimportanceofthisconstructforthebroad-
lyunderstoodhumanfunctioning,includinginthehealth(e.g.Pressman,Cohen,
2012;Dieneretal.,2015),interpersonal(e.g.Boehm,Lyubomirsky,2008;Priller,
