Thesouthwesterncornerofthecisternwasreconstructed
onaccountoftheneedtoprepareapathforvisitorsaspartofa
touristdevelopmentplanforthesite.Therestoredsectionwill
atthesametimeserveasaretainingwallfortheescarpment
(Fig.3).Thewall,madeoflargeblocksc.20-40x30-40x40-50cm,
wasbuiltonpreservedrelicsusinglimemortarandseparating
thenewpartsfromtheoriginaloneswithtarpaper.The
wall,whichhadmostprobablycollapsedduringa5thor6th
centuryearthquake,wasinByzantinetimesencasedinsideanew
oneofirregularshapeintendedastheclosingofthecistern
complexonthesouth.TheByzantinewallwasrecordedand
thencoveredup.
