vestibule(H-l).Theuncoveredfragmentofthewallwascovered
withplasteringidenticalwiththeonepreviouslyobservedon
theotherwallsfeaturinglargerectangularpanels.Thefunction
ofthisroomremainsunclear.However,itsconsiderablesize(al-
most5by5m),thecharacterofthedecoration,aswellasits
locationinrelationtotheentranceleadustoconcludethatit
mighthavebeenareceptionhallforvisitors.Intheadjoining
locusH-3b,averywellpreservedpavementwascleared.Itssur-
faceismarkedlywornwithcertaintracesgivingtheimpression
thattheroommusthavebeenoriginallyunroofed.Uponfur-
therexaminationithasbeenrevealedthatthewestwallofthe
roomwasoriginallybuiltasarowofevenlyspacedsquarepil-
lars.Severalthresholdswerestillpreservedinsitu,althoughthe
wholestructurewaslaterre-structuredasacontinuouswall.This
quiteunexpectedarchitecturalfeatureindicatedthatthespace
infrontofthepillars,latertakenbyroomsH-3bandH-2,served
originallyasanopencourtyard(3by5m)pavedwithflagstones.
Theexactchronologyofthisoccupationalphaseisyettobe
determined,butbasedonstratigraphicalevidence,itcouldhave
beenoftransitionalLateHellenistic/EarlyRomandate.
RoomH-7,locatedfurthertotheeast,wasalsofoundtobe
furnishedwithaverywellpreservedpavement.Tightlyfitted
largelimestoneslabscoveredthewholeexcavatedsurfaceofthe
room.
THEATERPORTICO
Asmall-sizedtesttrench(6by6m)wasopenedintheareaof
thehypotheticalintersectionoftheTheaterPorticoandthe
southernpassageoftheBathcomplex.
