sectorscontainspottery,redbricksandotherobjectsdatingfrom
thethreeperiodsrepresentedinourexcavations:theByzantine,
RomanandPtolemaicones.Amongtheobjectsfoundinthis
stratumtherearemanycoinsdatingfromthelate3rd/early
4thcenturyADandterracottas,e.g.theupperpartofastatuette
representinganearlyPtolemaicrulerwearingtheancientEgyptian
nemes-headclothandthe"doublecrown".
ApurelyByzantinelevelbeginsatadepthofc.0.80mbelow
thepresentsurface.Thisstratumcouldbereachedintworooms
duringthiscampaign(nos169and171).Severallarge-size
amphoraeandothervesselsthataretypicaloftheperiodcameto
lightinassociationwitharchitecturalfragments.Someofthemare
decoratedlimestoneblockswhichmusthavebelongedtoamon-
umentalbuilding,perhapsanearlyByzantinechurch(Fig.1).These
blocksoccurinasecondaryposition,whiletheamphoraeandjars
aresometimesstillstandingverticallyintheiroriginalpositions.
