andKK.Thelargerooms127and128provedtobeusedaspottery
workshops.Severalkilnsandlotofprefabricatedmaterialhave
beendiscoveredthere.Theactivityofthesekilnsmayhavebeen
connectedwiththematerialfoundinroom127,wherelotsofunba-
kedpotsandsherdswerefoundstucktogetheralongsidethe
room'seastwallinitslowerpart.Thismaterialcontainedthree
coinsdatingfromthetimeofPtolemyIIIplacingthisintensive
localpotteryproductioninthesecondhalfofthe3rdcenturyBC.
AcoinofPtolemyIVhasbeenfoundinasimilarcontextatahigher
levelinthesameroom.
Particularlyinterestingweretheresultsofourworkinroom
159andinsquaresJJ-KKwhicharesituatedinthenorthwestofthe
area.OurexcavationinsquareJJenlargedatrialpitcalled"X",in
whichremainsofared-brickconstruction(waterpitandfragments
ofacolumn)hadbeenfoundin1984.Underastratum2mdeep
containingdebriswithByzantineandRomanpottery,terracotta
fragmentsandcoins,remainsofalargebuildingmadeofredbricks
wereunearthedduringthiscampaign.Thisconstructiondiffersin
everyrespectfromthepotteryworkshopsdiscoveredinthesouth
ofthearea.ItprovedtobeabathfromthetimeofPtolemyVI,
constructedofredbricksbondedwithathicklayerofexcellent,
plaster-like,waterproofmortar.Twosmallsemi-circularbasins
andaslightlylargerovalbasinarepreservedinthesouthern
partofthebuilding.Theconstructionisdatedbythreecoinsof
PtolemyVI,foundbetweenthebricksandimmediatelyunder
theirlevel.Thebathstratumisparticularlyimportantforthe
stratigraphyofourexcavationsingeneral,foritclearlysepar-
atestheearlierlevels,belongingtothe3rdandthefirsthalfof
the2ndcenturyBC,fromthelaterones,connectedwiththe
secondhalfofthePtolemaicperiod.
Subsequentchronologicalphasescouldbestudiedparticular-
lywellinbuildingno.159,whichdefinitelydiffersfromthesmall
