ThePolish-EgyptianarchaeologicalmissionatTellAtrib,sponsoredbythe
PolishCenterforMediterraneanArchaeology,theEgyptianAntiquities
OrganizationandBankMisr,hasworkedonthesiteofKomSidiYoussouf
(suburbofBenha)from10Septemberuntil6November1989.

OuractivitiesconcentratedontheareaadjoiningthehillofKomSidi
YoussouffromtheSouth.Thisareahasbeendividedintosquaresof10x
10m.Sometrialpitsinsidethesesquareshadbeenmadetwentyyearsago
andin1985,andthesouthpartofthisareawasexcavatedin1987and1988.
Thepresentcampaignhadtwoaims:
a)toenlargetheexcavationsinthesquaresinthenorthand
westofthearea;
b)todeepentheexcavationsinsomeselectedplaces,particu-
larlythoseinwhichpreviouslyworkhadtobestoppedbecause
ofahighwatertable.
Inthenorthofthearea,theexcavationsincludedthesquares
FF-HHandLL-NN(30by30m),whileinthewesternpartthe
squaresCC-DD,JJ,PPandQQhavebeenpartofourresearch.
ThenorthernsquareshavebeenexploreddowntotheByzantine
level,andtheirdeeperstratashouldbeexcavatedduringthe
comingseason.
Alowwatertableatthebeginningofthisseasonenabledus
todeepentheexcavationinsomeroomsofthePtolemaicquarter.
