TheCarboniferousandPermianrugosecoralsoftheCordilleran-Arctic-Uralian(C-A-U)Realm,

belongtothebestknowngroupofanimalsofthoseperiods.Spitsbergen,situatedatthattimeonthe

northernmarginofthedriftingsupercontinentPangea,standsoutfromtheentireC-A-URealmfor

itsexceptionallylargeaccumulationoftheirfossils.TheclimateobtainingintheCarboniferousand

EarlyPermianwasfavourabletotheirdevelopment.Atthattimetoday’sSvalbardArchipelagolay

roughlyjustabovetheTropicofCancerandinthoseperiodsandlaterkeptmovingnorthwardsuntil

ithadreacheditspresentlocationbetweenthe75thand80thparallelsinthenorthernsubpolarzone.

Thecoralsdescribedinthismonographcomefromthreeareas:theHornsundregion,aPolakkfjellet

hill,andtheGrønfjordenregion.Theybelongtoboth,knownandnewspecies.Thus,ontheonehand,

theyattesttotheafﬂnityoftheSpitsbergenrugosanswiththerestoftheC-A-URealm,corroborating

theirconnectionwiththefaunasofAlaska,theUrals,theCentralEuropeanBasin,andArcticCanada

(SverdrupBasin).Ontheotherhand,however,theycanbeindicativeoflimitedcommunication

possibilities,orperhapsofthepresenceonSpitsbergenenvironmentalconditionsdeterminingsuch

ataxonomiccomposition.
