Bothetchingsarereversedinrelationtotheoriginalpaintings,theydepictnotably
wellingraphictechniquesthepictorialvalueofbothpaintings.
In1777thelastPolishking,StanisławIIAugust,boughtRembrandt’spendantsfor
theWarsawRoyalcollection.TheroyalminiaturistVincentLesseurexecutedtwomini-
atures,nowbelongingtothePolishMuseuminRapperswilinSwitzerland12:ThePor-
traitofyoungwomanwithhishandsontheparapet,signedontheright:W.L./179713;
Scholarathiswritingtable,signedonthesideofthetableontheright:W.L./179714.On
theGirl’sportrait,Lesseurdepictedthecolumninthebackground,butplacedhissigna-
tureontheoppositesideofRembrandt’s,whileintheScholar’sportraithefollowedthe
artist’ssignaturepositioning.
Probablymorerecentisanotherpairofcopiesofthetwoportraitsbyanunknown
artist,mostlikelyfromBacciarelli’sMalarnia.ItisaSapiehafamilydepositfromtheir
collectionsinKrasiczyn,nowbelongingtotheWawelCastleMuseuminCracowand
storedinitsbranchmuseumatthePieskowaSkałaCastle15.Inspiteofthefactthatthe
appearanceofbothcopieshasbeenalteredbyanoldextensiverestoration,theyseemto
berelativelyclosetotheoriginals.
AftertheabdicationofStanisławIIAugust,in1815thepaintingsweresoldtothe
PolisharistocratKazimierzRzewuski(1751–1820)andmovedtoAustria,latertobe
inheritedbyKarolLanckoroński(1848–1933),aPolishlandowner,politician,Viennese
civilservantandfamousartcollector.
Inthenineteenthcenturybothpictureswerecopiedseveraltimes–theGirl’spicture
moreoftenwithcopiesintwoothersPolishmuseums:theMuseumPalaceinWilanów
andtheŁańcutCastleMuseum.IntheWilanówcopy16,thegirlrestsherhandsonan
armchair,notontheframe,butthepictureseemstobeheavilyrepainted.Itisprobably
anineteenthcenturycopy–probablyexecutedafteranearlieronementionedinKing
JanIIISobieski’sinventoryandorderedbyhimin1687forhisresidenceinŻółkiew
(presentlyUkraine)17.TheŁańcutcopycomesfromthePotockifamilycollectionor,
possibly,duchessLubomirska18.Itistheweakestcopy,butalsoheavilyoverpainted.The
modelisdepictedwithouthandsandissurroundedbyapaintedoval.Theotherpairof
copiesofbothtroniescomefromtheLubomirskiMuseuminLviv(existinguntil1939),
nowinthecollectionoftheLvivArtGallery,Ukraine–currentlyondisplayatZłoczów
