In1994,theWarsawRoyalCastlewashonouredwithanunequalledartisticandhis-
toricallyvaluableartcollectioninPoland–adonationfromtheLanckorońskiFamily1
–includingtwopaintingsattributedtoRembrandtHarmenszoonvanRijn(1606–1660):
Girlinapictureframe2andScholarathiswritingtable3(ill.I,II).Themostpreciousof
thePolisheighteenthcenturyroyalcollectionpieceswereconsideredlostforaboutfifty
yearsandthatiswhyRembrandt’sauthorshipwasputintodoubt,mostlyasfarasthe
Girl’sportraitisconcerned.Newresearchforanup-to-dateattributionofbothpictures
becamethemainfocusfortheWarsawRoyalCastleteam:between2004and2006the
paintingswereexamined,treatedandreattributedasaresultofthecooperationofPolish
