Toruńatthattimewasundoubtedlyassociatedwiththeinfluxof
Wesphalianmerdants,whoweredeprivedoftheopportunityto
diredlyobtainrawmaterialsinPomerania(throughLübectrading
poss)andhadtodangetheirtradepolicytowardsthenewtowns
andcitiesintheTeutonicOrder)ssate.Merdantsarrivingfrom
WesphaliaandLübecsettledpermanentlyinPolishlands,but
continuedtomaintainclosetieswiththeirregionoforigin.Slightly
earlier,theuWesphalians”firscametoElbląg,wheretheydominat-
edthelocalcouncilasearlyasinthe1280s.18Amarkedcooperation
betweenPrussianandWesphalianmerdantstookplaceinthe
firshalfofthe14thcenturyinFlanders.In1340and1341,the
twogroupsreceivedjointtradeprivilegesfromCountWilliamIV
ofHolland.In1347,uWesphalians”andmerdantsfromPrussia
formedajointtertialinthethenesablishedHanseaticagencyin
Bruges.Undoubtedly,thereasonsforthiscooperationshouldbe
soughtintheclosefamilytiesbetweenWesphalianandPrussian
(primarilyToruń)merdants.Teliteraturealsopointstoearlier
Prussian-WesphaliantradecontadswiththeNetherlands,theuse
ofDutdshipstotranlortgoodsonthePrussia-Flandersroute,and
theanti-Lübecbacgroundofthesecontads.19Indeed,theamountof
informationonPrussian-LübeccooperationinHollanddecreased
markedlyinthefirshalfofthe14thcenturyininverseproportion
totheamountofinformationonPrussian-Wesphaliancooperation.
