liberation,truthandsocialjustice.TeChinesetranslationofJankoMuzykant

(JankotheMusician),anovellabyHenrykSienkiewicz,waspublishedin1906;it

wastranslatedfromJapanesebyWuChou.However,Chinesereadershadtowait

another70yearsfortheﬁrstdirecttranslationfromPolish.In1976,3theyreleased

DziadyczęśćIII(Forefathers’Eve,Part3)byAdamMickiewicz,translatedbyYi

Lijun,atranslatorfromtheﬁrstgenerationofChinesegraduatesofPolishstudies.4

Tisshouldbedeemedagroundbreakingevent:Dziadyistheveryﬁrsttranslation

offoreignliteraturepublishedinChinaaferthedecadeofhiatuscausedbythe

eventsoftheCulturalRevolution.

AsinPolandatthetimewhenitwaswritten,thisgreatworkbyAdamMic-

kiewiczalsobecameapropheticpieceofliteratureinChina.Itwaslabelledthe

ﬁrstsignofthepoliticalthawing.Selectedfragmentsofthisversedramawereper-

formedontheChineseArtisticYoungTeatrestageandwerebroadcastbyBeijing

Radio.22yearslaterin1998,thesametranslatorpublishedPanTadeusz.5Atthat

time,YiLijunwasalreadyanestablishedprofessorofPolishstudiesinBeijing,

ascientiﬁcandresearchunitatBeijingForeignStudiesUniversitythathasexisted

for44yearsatthattime.ProfessorYiLijun’sachievements,notonlyintheﬁeldof

translation,providevividproofofjusthowvaluabletheinitiativetosetupPolish

studiesinChinawas.

ItallstartedatBeijingUniversity,wheretheChairofPolishLanguagewasset

upintheDepartmentofRussianStudieson1September1954.20studentswere

enrolled,andtheirﬁrstChineselecturerwasXiaoHuimin.6Hewasoneofthevery

ﬁrstsevenyoungChinesestudentssenttostudyinPolandin1950.Hestudied

PolishattheUniversityofWarsawbutwascalledbacktoBeijingaferfouryears.

Inhispioneeringeforts,hereceivedsupportfromLeszekCyrzyk,aPolishlinguist

fromtheJagiellonianUniversity.

3In1964,LinHongliang（林洪亮）translatedOnRomanticPoetrybyAdamMickiewiczand

OntheNovelsofT.T.JeżbyElizaOrzeszkowaandincludedthemintotheCompilationofTranslations

ofClassicalTeoryofLiteratureandArt,Volume4.However,asLiYinancommented(2013),readers

largelyfailedtonoticethosetexts.

4YiLijun(易丽君),thenestorofPolishstudiesinChina,studiedattheUniversityofWarsaw

in1954-1960.ShehasbeenassociatedwithBFSUsince1962.Sheeducatedmanygenerationsof

PolishlinguistsinChina.AsaprominenttranslatorandresearcherofPolishliterature,shereceived

theCTransatlantyk’award.HerﬁrstpublishedtranslationwasDziadybyAdamMickiewicz,which

wasalsotheveryﬁrstpieceofforeignliteraturepublishedinChinaafertheCulturalRevolution.
