calappearance,rolesandprofessions,andtoanalysetheircontent.The
studyofthecontentofthetraitconnectedcomponentsofthestereo-
typesofmanandwomanwasnotconductedduetotheexistenceofthe
abovementionedstudiesbyKuczyńska(1992a,1992b).Althoughthese
havebeenconductednearly17yearsagotheyarecharacterizedbya
highdegreeofaccuracyanddependability.Thestudywasalsotodeter-
mine,towhatextentisthecomponentcontentofthegenderstereotype
connectedwiththesubject’sbiologicalsex.
Thepresentstudieswereconductedinthetwostages.Thepurpose
ofthefirststage(Study1)wastogenerallyexploretheproblemandto
constructatooltobeusedinthesecondstage.Study2wasdesignedto
explorethecomplexityofthestereotypesofmanandwoman.

Method
Participants
Twohundredandthirtypeopleaged18to30(130womenand100
men),allofthemfull-timeorpart-timestudentsofvariousfieldsatthe
UniversityofOpole,tookpartinthestudy.Atnotimeduringthefirst
orsecondstageofthestudydidpsychologystudentstakepart.
Materialsandprocedure
Thestudyconsistedoffillingoutasinglesheetofpaperwiththree
columns,headingofwhichwereentitled:“Appearance”,“Professions”,
and“Roles”,alongwiththefollowinginstructions:“Wearecurious
aboutyournotionsofPolishwomen.Writedownallassociationsthat
cometoyourmindregardingtheirtypicalappearance,professionsand
roles.Youhaveallthetimeyouneed.”Ananalogousresearchschema
wasalsousedinreferencetoPolishmen.
Inordertoeliminatetheprimacyefectandapossibilityoffalsifica-
tionofthestudyresultstheorderoftheheadingsonthequestionnaires
wasdiferent.Onthetwousedversionsforwomenandformen
theheadingswereorderedaccordinglyasfollows:appearance,roles,pro-
fessionsvs.roles,professions,appearance.Thestudyparticipantswere
