Tetextpresentsapersonaliststudycarriedoutpreciselyfrom
theproposalthatImadeinthatbook,andwhichrepresented
anoveltyintheinterpretationofthisphilosophy.Tereare,in
fact,dińerentwaysofinterpretingpersonalism.Someunderstand
itasakindofuniversalphilosophythatwouldencompassevery-
onewho,inonewayoranother,hasbeenawareofhumandigni-
ty.Butsuchapositionleadspersonalismtoadeepphilosophical
weaknessand,toacertainextent,toitsnon-existence.Despite
manyattempts,forexamplebyTomasBuford,itisnotpossi-
bletounifyvariouspositionsthatrangefromHinduthoughtto
classicalpersonaliststhroughreflectionsoftheAmericanIndi-
ans.Allofthem,certainly,mayhaveperceivedthedignityofthe
personinonewayoranother.Butcanaphilosophyemergefrom
thisrangeofvariedpositions?Itdoesn’tseemtobethecase.on
thecontrary,onegetstheimpressionthatthisextremediversity
onlyleadstothedissolutionofpersonalismasaphilosophy.
