understoodasawhole.Secondly,itisnecessary“tooutlinethebordersbetween
suchastructuredentiretythatconstitutestheactualsystem,andtheexternal
conditionsdeterminingitsactivity,whichinturnconstitutestheenvironment
thesystemoperatesin.”4Suchastructuredapproachderivesfromthefactthat
thesystemicanalysisconceptencompassestwomainassumptions.Thefirstone
isthatthesourceofallchangesandtransformationsliesinthesystemitself.
Theotherone,however,pointstothefactthat“anychangestakingplacewithin
asystemaretheresultofafeedback-typerelationshipbetweenthesystemand
itsenvironment.”5
Thesewerethesameassumptionsthatguidedtheauthorsofthisstudyin
theirresearch.Beforeanyresearchcouldbegin,however,apreciseselectionof
theresearchfieldhadtobemadeandtheaforementionedconstituents,which
arecharacteristicforasystemicanalysis,hadtobedefined.Firstly,theauthors
decidedtoselectthestates,whosepoliticalsystemswouldberesearched.Three
southernEuropeanstates,namelyGreece,Spain,andItaly,havebeenchosen.
Accordingtotheauthors,theeconomiccrisis,thebeginningsofwhichdate
backto2008,impactedthesestatesthemostseverelyoutofallthecountriesin
theEuropeanUnion.
Thenextchallengewastodefinethesetofpolitical,historical,geographic,
social,andeconomicconditions,whichformtheenvironmentofthepolitical
systemstobeanalysed.Themostimportantfactordefiningthenatureofthe
plannedworkwassurelytheeconomicfactor,whichconstitutestheaforemen-
tionedcrisis.Thiswasevidencedbythefirstobservationsprecedingtheselec-
tionoftheresearchfield,whichrevealedthatseriouschangesinthefunction-
ingofallthreepoliticalsystemsoccurredafterthecrisisensued,thatis,after
2008.Conductingameticulousproblemanalysisthereforerequireditscauses,
itscourse,andconsequencestobecharacterised,foritneedstobeemphasised
thatpoliticalscienceconsiderseconomicconditionstobeakeyelementimpact-
ingpoliticalsystems.EdwardHaliżakrightlyclaimsthat“thetruthaboutsocial
phenomenaisofacross-disciplinarynatureandrestrictingoneselftoonlyone
fieldofresearchpreventsonefromfullyunderstandingit”6andthatiswhy
“separatingpoliticsfromeconomyservesapurelyanalyticalpurpose.”7
