isaimedtoencouragerelaxationandreflection,
partiallythankstoitsplainaesthetics.Thecontent,
developedinvariousforms,referstotheissues
touchedupondirectlyinLachert’sspatiallayout
ofthedistrict,whichwasenvisagedbythearchi-
tectinascaleofasmalltown(thefirsturbanlayout
draft,preparedintheWarsawReconstructionOf-
fice,estimatedthenumberofMuranów’sresidents
at36,000;todaythisnumberhasalmostdoubled).
Theissueswereasfollows:thegreenery,whichwas
assignedavitalrolewithintheproject—despite
dificultiesofgrowinganythingontherubble—
andwhichisrigorouslyprotectedbythedistrict
residentstoday;thechallengeposedbycom-
municationroutes,relatedtotheconstructionof
anadditionalundergroundstationandtothelack
ofparkingspaces.In1949,Lachertseparatedcar
traficfromthepedestrianone—carsweretouse
themainthoroughfaresexclusively,andassum-
ingtherewasonecarperonehundredinhabit-
ants,itwasdecidedthatonecentralcarparkand
0,25haofparkingspaceswithinthehousinges-
tateswouldsufice,especiallythattrams,buses
andundergroundweretooperateinthedistrict.
onthedistrict’ssocialtissueandthecomfortofits
permanentresidents.Meanwhile,newdevelopers’
investmentsstirintenseemotions,mainlyrelated
tothefactthattheyencroachonthesofarunde-
velopedgreenareas.
Aleitmotifofthecontentdisplayedontheexhibi-
tion’smezzaninelevelisthefactthatitposesques-
tionswithoutimplyinganswers.Foralltheques-
tionspertaintotheunknown,tothefutureover
whichwemaymerelyponder:howwillMuranów
looklike,whatwillhappentoitinthecomingdec-
ades?Thatisbynomeansallthereis.Apreliminary
projectofthehousingestatethatisalsoamemorial
servesasalaboratoryinamuchbroadersense—
itisalabinwhichspatialandarchitecturalinno-
vationsarecomplementedbyaboldsocialvision
suchastheonesoncepursuedbytheWerkbund
orWarsawHousingCooperative[WSM].Whilepre-
sentingMuranów’spublicspace,themezzanine
levelexpositionalsoactsasaprivateterritory,
furnishedwithbuildingvolumesinamacroscale;
aterritorywhichcaneasilybecomethesceneof
variedsocialinteractionsbetweenvisitorswho
acquirenewinformationandsharetheirinsights
andobservations.
Inthesocialistpropaganda,Muranówwasthefirst
workingclassdistrictinWarsawcitycentre.In
thedocumentsdatedasearlyas1948thereisan
annotation(handwrittenbyStefanOssowiecki):
uItisvitalfromboththesocialandculturalper-
one-bedroomapartmentsofSouthernMuranów
spectivethatweensurethedistrict’spopulationis
hadtoaccommodatefamilieswithtwoorthree
fromtheverystartnotfullyuniformwithregardto
children.Today,suchapartmentsaresoughtafter
theiroccupation.”7Therefore,Muranówwasenvis-
bystudents,or—increasingly—turnedintouresi-
agedasasociallydiverseplace,yetshapedwith
