SomeworksonPlato’sTheatetuswhichwerepublishedinlastfew
yearsexplorePlato’sthoughtonlanguagefromtheperspectiveofhis
conceptionofknowledge.6Itisobviousthatthedialoguesof“thelate
period”arecommonlyconsideredasimportanttoPlato’sconceptof
knowledge;thevalidexceptionistherecognitionofimportanceof
GorgiastoPlato’sdialectics.7Animportantexampleofanattemptto
reconstructholisticallytheepistemologyofPlatoisgivenbyNicholas
P.White,8althoughitisclearthatauthorusestheanalyticalap-
proachtoPlato’sdialogues.Hiswayofreadingofthelocutiafrom
Respublic,althoughverysimilarincontentandsometimesanalogi-
calinconclusions,isdifferentfrommineinthewayofanalysis.
Whiteexploresthestructureofargument,butheisnotinterestedin
theanalysisofPlato’snotionsdescribingthedifferentwaysofex-
ploringandperceivingtheworld.
WhilecontemporarystudiesonepistemologyandontologyofPlato
maybecomplexandmayincludethesubjectoflanguageandcom-
munication,modernstudiesonancienttheoryofgrammarandan-
cientphilosophyoflanguagestart,ingeneral,theirinquirieswith
