ofprofessionallife.Themoreonethinkswhileundertakingactions,themore
independentfrombiologicalconditionsisthecreativedevelopment.Theperiod
ofgreatestachievementsisthereforeindividualforeachperson.
Thecourseoffamilylifecanbedividedintoseveralphases(Worach-Kardas,
1988).Theyare:thephaseofprocreation,thephaseofanearlyparenthood,the
phaseofarelativefamilystabilisationandthepostparentalphase.Thecourse
ofman’slifeisfocusedonprofessionaltasks,whilewoman’slifeevolvesaround
family.
Peopleinmidlifehavearelativelystablefamilysituation;theirchildrenhave
enteredlatechildhoodandadolescenceanditispossibletoincreaseprofessional
activenessaswellastoformandimproverelationswithinvarioussocialcircles.
Changesinsocialdevelopmentcanbenotedandtheymanifestthemselvesby
anincreasedactivityincontactwithothers.Inearlystagesfriendshipboundsare
formedonthebasisofplay,lateraccordingtosimilarinterestsandafterthatthey
arebasedonthesimilarityofpsychologicalfeatures.
Thenextstageisthepostparentalperiodinwhichchildrenbecomeindepend-
entandleavefamilyhome.Maritalrelationsarestrengthenedorweakened,the
importanceofworkincreasesandthisdictatestherhythmofeverydaylife.
Adevelopmentaltaskofadultsistoworkoutflexibilitymechanismswhich
wouldhelpthemfunctionproperlyinlateadulthoodandallowamildenteringthe
periodofgrowingolder.Peck(1968)specifiedfoursuchmechanisms.Thefirst
ofthemistore-evaluatethesenseofimportance,thevalueofwisdomandphysi-
calstrength;thesecondoneliesinamutualevaluationofwomenandmenonthe
basisoftheirindividualpersonalityfeaturesandnotonlyinaccordancewiththeir
sexualinterests;thethirdisthedevelopingofexibilityinemotionalengagement
whichhelpstoacceptthefactofpassingofclosefriendsandrelativesandform-
ingnewrelationships;andthefourthallowstomaintainmentalexibilityandthe
opennesstonewideas.

tedwithretiring,inwomenattheageof60andinmenattheageof65.
