inpsychologicalwell-beingisnotedinthosebetween40and55(Warret
al.,1988).Constitutingapartofmen’sprofessionallife,thelossofwork
intheearlierperiodofprofessionallifeisinterpretedasapartoftrial-and-
errormethodofsearchingforwork.However,inthestabilisationperiodit
isseenasapersonalfailureandthelossofsecurity.Ithappensoftenthat
youngpeoplewhodonothavefamiliesandfamily-relatedcosts,simply
returntofamilyhome,whichimposeslowerpsychologicalcostsonthem.
Theroleofsocialsupport.Stressconnectedwithunemploymentaswell
aswithotherfactorscanbealleviatedthankstothesupportfromrelatives
and/orpeoplewhoareclosetous(Vinokur,vanRyn,1993).Ironically
enough,thelossofemploymentresultsinthedeteriorationofthemarital
relationship,whichistheprimarysourceofsupportformen.
Tosumup,therearemanytasks,whichareundertakenandaccomplished
inadulthood.Theseactivitiesconcentrateonhelpingchildren,preparingforthe
ageingofparentsanddevelopingsocialattitudes,whileonesimultaneouslyno-
ticesphysiologicalchangesandadjuststothem.Stableemploymentisveryim-
portantforpeopleinmidlife,becauseitnotonlyallowsthemtosatisfybasic
economicneeds,butalsotodevelophobbies.
The40thyearisthemiddleoflife,whichcan,butnotnecessarilyhasto
bringaboutacrisis.Akeyreflectioninthisperiodisfocusedonachievements
comparedtoopportunitiesfromtheviewpointofeliminatinganydiscrepancies
betweenthem.Dependingonpreviousexperiences,after40therecomeseither
oneofthemostcreativeperiodsoflifeorasignificantdecreaseinactivityand
limitations.Thisiswhytheperceptionofthesecondhalfoflifeiscrucialforthe
experiencedqualityoflife.Processesinfluencingthepsycheinmidlifeareeither
theacceptanceofchangesorthelackofacceptanceandtheactivationofdefence
mechanisms,whichaccordingtothelevelofmaturitytaketheformofdisclaimer,
rationalisationordenial(Freud,1982).
AccordingtoSzewczuk(1962),itisaperiodofprogressiveexpansionatthe
peak,whichisconstitutedbychangesintheattitudetowardsoneselfandone’s
health,towardsfamilyandwork.Ifthestabilisationhadbeenachievedinpro-
fessionallife,onedevelopsinterests,engagesincreativeactivitiesandenriches
thespirituallife.Onlyaftertheperiodofadulthoodcomesatimeforregressive
expansionthatisageing.
Havingresearchedthephasesofprofessionallife,Szafer(1968)indicates
thatinearlyperiodsofprofessionalcareerweareguidedbyouterimpulses,
whileinlaterperiodsmuchmorebyinnerimpulseswhichresultfromcreativity
andambitions.
Inlateadulthoodworkisoneofthemainhumanactivities;thereforeanalysed
fromautotelicorinstrumentalviewpoint,itconstitutesthevalueinitself.Thanks
toworkourpersonalityisshaped;itallowsustomeetnewpeople,constitutesthe
