On5April1710inBender,OrlykwaselectedHetmaninplaceofMazepa.
Itisknownthatbeforehisdeath,MazepanamedhisnephewAndriy
Voynarovskyashissuccessor.Herejectedtheofer,but,asYakovenko
pointsout,hewantedtoreceivetheinheritance.TarasChukhlibquotes
anexcerptfromaspeechinthestyleofancientorators,deliveredbythe
newlyelectedHetmanduringareceptionintheSwedishKingCharlesXII
camp.

struggle,asOrestSubtelnypointsout.In1714,OrlykwasinMoldavia

life.Hebeginstounderstandthehopelessnessofthesituationinwhichhe
hasfoundhimselfmoredeeply.HeretheHetmanwillremainfor12long
years,isolatedfromhisusualsurroundings,fromhiswifeandchildren.
