noticedthefollowingcommonrulepresentinAmericansociety:“After
divorceitisnearlyalwaysthemotherwhoremainsprimarilyresponsi-
bleforthephysicalcareofthechildren;thefather’sstandardofliving
typicallyrises,whilethatofthemotherandchildrendeclinesinalltoo
manycasesbelowthepovertyline.”1Isupposethisruleworkssimilarly
inquiteanumberofothercountries.Divorcedmotherswithchildren
usuallybearadisproportionatelyheavierburdenmeasuredineconomic
termswhenitcomestothesituationofthebreakupofthefamily
,notto
mentionothertypesofburdenswhicharedifculttobemeasuredand
quiteindividuallyexperiencedbyparticularwomenandmen.However,
thisstatementdoesnotintendtopresentthechildasacauseofthebur-
den.Onthecontrary
,itaimsatshowinghowmotherswithchildrenare
oftendiscriminatedagainstinjuxtapositionwithmenfathersofthese
children,andhowthispointstothefactthatthesocietyatlargedoes
notadequatelyvaluemotherhood,parenthood,andthegoodofthechild.
Itdoesnotvaluethepersonswellenough.Adisproportionateburden
putonthearmsofthemotherinsuchsadcasesofdivorceisaproofof
howdiscriminationagainstwomenisconnectedwiththediscrimination
againstchildren,andhowbothtypesofinjusticesfollowfromthecom-
monandsystemicmentalityoftreatingpersonsasdisengagedindividuals
