Wemaywonderwhythelotofwomenissooftensocloselyrelatedto

thatofchildren.Partoftheexplanationmaybeprovidedbythesystemic

causementionedearlier:menarenotperceivedasresponsiblefortheir

ofspringasmuchasmothersare,sothesocialarrangementsusuallybur-

denwomenwiththealmostsoleresponsibilityforraisingtheirchildren.

Inotherwords,wecannoteitastheinstitutionalindividualismpaying

apremiumtomen(incorrectlyseenasdisengagedindividualswithout

commitments);individualismwhichthuscausesanti-femaleandanti-

childefectsatthesametime.

Anothercause,thoughpartlyconnectedwiththepreviousone,may

bethefemalegenerallyhighsenseofresponsibilityforthewelfareofthe

childshegavebirthto.Thesenseofresponsibilityitselfdoesnot,ofcourse,

constituteaproblembuttheexclusivewayofattributingthisresponsibil-

itytooneself,ratherthansharingtheresponsibilitywiththefather,may

betheproblem.Anothersideofthisisthatveryoftenitmaybethecase

thatthesocialinstitutionstreatmothersautomaticallyasmorerelatedto

thechildthanthefathersare.However,Iclaimthatpartoftheproblem

maybethewoman’sownwillofdisconnectingthefathersfromchildren,

andattributingthesoleresponsibilityforthechildren.However,whether

thisisthefaultofwomenorthefaultoftheinstitutionalsolutionsover-

burdeningthewomenandfreeingmenfromtheirduties,theproblemis

thatthefemalestrongrelatednesstothechild(orthesocialassumption

ofthisrelatedness)allowsmen(throughtheunjustpolicieslegitimizedby
