Flndlkçlstressedthatinthisnewworld,moredifficultbutalsomoreimportant
thanmanagingproduction,wasforminggoodrelationshipswithothers;success
inthisareawouldleadnaturallytoimprovedproduction.
Thequestionofwhatexactlyismeantbyforminggoodrelationshipswith
otherswasaddressedbySltklAbdullahoğlu,Vice-PresidentofAnatolianTigers
Confederation’s(ASKON),whichdrawstogethermostlysmall-capitalistentre-
preneurs.Hestatedthat“theentrepreneurialismoftodaymeanspartnershipsand
togetherness.Itmeanspartneringinexpensesaswell.Andforsourcing,itmeans
usingthespaceofthepurchasingfirmfor[producing]intermediarygoods,to
carryoutalmostprivatizedformofproductionwithinthecompany”[Özdemir,
2006,p.119].AmemberoftheIndependentBusinesspersonAssociation
(MÜSİAD)impliedsimilarlythatentrepreneurs“mustnotshutthemselvesaway
inthefactories,workshopsandoffices.Instead,theyshouldparticipateintours
andfairs,learnforeignlanguages”[Özdemir,2006,p.175].
ActivitiesresemblingtheJapanesemodelquotedabovecanbeincreasingly
observedamongbusinesspeopleinTurkeyaswell.Themostwell-knownex-
ampleisactivitiesorganizedbytheMÜSİAD.Welearnfromitsmonthlymaga-
zine(Çerçeve)thatintheearlyyearsofitsfounding,weekly“WednesdayMeet-
ings”representedanimportantvehicleforsocialization,allowingMÜSİAD
memberstomeetoneanotherand“bond”.Beforethemeetings,businesspeople
wouldcometogetherforameal,taketheopportunitytochatwithoneanother,
thenattendseminarstowhichprominentpoliticiansorthinkershadbeeninvited.
EventhePrimeMinisteroftheperiod,BülentEcevit,washostedatonesuch
seminar[Çerçeve,1992,pp.25-27].
Fromthesemeetingsandothereventsofthiskind,itwashopedthatMÜSİAD
memberswouldcreatepossibilitiesforformingcooperativerelationsandpartner-
shipswithoneanother.Anentrepreneurassociation-membercouldassumethatany
otherentrepreneurhemetherewasapotentialpartnerthathecouldtrust.
MÜSİADisnotauniquebusinessassociationinTurkeyandintheworld.
Recently,therearemanyinstitutionsandnetworkswhichfacilitatethecoopera-
tionandsocialrelationshipsbetweentheentrepreneurs.Thankstotheseactivi-
tiesthemembersoftheseassociationsareabletomakecontactwithentrepre-
neurcommunitiesallaroundtheworld.Andweknowthattheserelationswere
sustainedoutsideanydirecteconomicpurposeintheformofsocialandcultural
activitieslikefamilypicnicsandculturalexcursions.Asthemostcriticalactivity
fortheentrepreneursbecomefosteringtheserelationshipswiththeotherentre-
preneurs,moreandmoretimeisdevotedtotheseactivitiesinthethirdperiod.
