(Cortes)toswearthePrinceofAsturiasasanheirprovidedthemostgran-
diosewelcomingthisModernAgecityhadlivedtothatday.Itisprobably
themostspectacularpoliticalfestivitythattookplaceinPortugalduring
theAncienRegime.Amongotherphysicalelementsthearrivallefuswith,
thereare:themagnifcentextensiblesheetoftheking)slandingandthe
royalcommitteeattheport,paintedbyDomingosVieiraandengraved
byJuanSchorquens,andanexceptionalseriesofephemeraldecorations,of
whichthehighlightsarethetriumphalarches,withaManneristdesignand
signifcantFlemishinfuences.14
AnotheroneofthegreatHabsburgarrivalsofthe17thcenturywasin
AntwerpbyCardinal-InfanteFerdinandofAustriaon17thofApril,1635,
describedbyJean-GaspardGevaerts,ahumanistandStatesecretaryof
thiscity,inhisnarrationPompaintroitushonoriserenisssimiprincipisFerdi-
nandiAustriaciHispaniaruminfantisż(Antverpiae:apudTeod.aTulden,
1641)(Fig.1.6).Atthattime,thecitywasinfulleconomicdeclineaferthe
DutchblockedthemouthoftheScheldtriver.Teinhabitantstrustedin
theCardinal-Infantetoexpeltheenemywithanothermilitaryvictory;
thus,theysparednoexpensetoreceivethenewgovernoroftheNether-
lands.TeodoorvanTuldenwastheauthorofmostoftheforty-twoen-
gravingsthatillustrateandshowtheephemeralarchitecturebuiltforthe
arrival,designedbyPeterPaulRubens.
On6thofOctober,1644,QueenElisabethofFrance,thefrstwifeof
PhilipIV
,diedandthecourtcelebratedherfuneraryriteson18thofNo-
vemberattheChurchofSt.JerometheRoyal.Teywereorganisedbythe
CountofCastrillo,thepresidentoftheCounciloftheIndies,andthetemple
andcatafalqueornamentsweredonefollowingthedesignsofJuanGómezde
Mora,mainmasterofroyalconstruction.Teanonymousnarration,Pompa
funeral,honrasyexequiasenlamuertede(ż)IsabeldeBorbónż(Madrid:por
DiegoDíazdelaCarrera,1645),isillustratedwiththecatafalque,thenor-
