Slidingvectorsdetermineaphysicalquantitycorrectlyifthey

lieinthesamestraightline.Anexampleistheforcevector.The

efectofaforcevectorwillnotchangeaslongasitisapplied

toanypointalongthedirectionofthevector.Boundvectors

haveaspeciﬁcpointofapplication.Thisisexempliﬁedbythe

displacementvectorofaspeciﬁcpointofadeformablebody,the

velocityorthedisplacementvectorsofaspeciﬁcpointofarigid

bodyinitsfreemotion.

Thisclassiﬁcationofvectorsinmechanicsisimportantand

assignmentofthegivenvectortotheincorrectgroup,while

retainingthethreebasicvectorproperties(magnitude,direction

andsense),couldleadtoawrongphysicalinterpretationofthe

mathematicaloperationsonvectors.Vectorsareequivalentif

theyrepresentthesamevectorquantity.Twofreevectorsare

alwaysequivalent.Slidingvectorsareequivalentiftheyliein

thesamestraightline.Boundvectorsareequivalentiftheyare

appliedtothesamepoint.
