Introduction
Thepresentstudydealswiththeelementsofnarrativegrammarinasingleliterary
corpusofcontemporaryPolish.Astherepertoireoflinguisticmeansthatmay
bedeployedintheconstructionofacoherentnarrativetextisextensiveand
heterogeneous,manifestingondifferenthierarchicallevelsofanalysis,thisstudy
willprofilethosewhichIconsidertobethemostprominent.
Inrecentdecades,thegrammarofnarrativehasbecomeamajorfieldof
interestinlinguisticinquiry,andnodescriptionofalanguagecanbecomplete
withoutadetailedanalysisofitsnarrativesubsystem.Moreover,asnarrative
grammarconstitutesanimportantbridgebetweenlinguisticandliteraryanalysis,
itsfindingsmaycontributetothewidefieldofliterarytheory,particularlyto
narratologicalresearch.
Itshouldbeobviousthatdifferentlanguagesemploydifferentmeansfor
textstructuring,evenifthelanguagesaregeneticallyrelatedorhaveahistory
oflanguagecontacts.Inthecaseofgeneticallyrelatedlanguages,itis
particularlyimportanttobeawareofthepitfallsinvolvedinassumingthat
cognateformsperformcognatefunctions.Naturally,withinagivenlanguage
distincttext-typesfeaturedifferentcombinationsanddistributionsofdevices.
Forexample,manyoftheobservationsmaderegardingthestructureof
ascientifictextarepartiallyvalidatbestfortheinvestigationofanarrative
text.
ForPolish,thecomprehensivestudyofnarrativegrammarhasbeentosome
extentneglected,althoughtherearedescriptionsofthesyntacticfunctionof
individuallexemesorgrammaticalformsinnarrative,whileattheotherextreme,
thereareinquiriesintotheepistemologicalstructuresandpsychologicalprocesses
