ontherelevantclassofexpressions.Finally,thisstudyreflectsuponthepossibility
ofwhetherinsightsfromthemoreorlessfragmentaryanalysescanbeputtogether
toyieldamorecomprehensiveaccountofNPNstructures.Theconclusionisthat,
whilelinguisticsandphilosophyoflanguagecaninformoneanotherinthestudy
ofthedatainquestion,aunified4linguistic-philosophical’solutiontosyntactic
andsemanticproblemsdiscussedinthischapterdoesnotseemfeasible.Themajor
reasonsincludetheoreticalandmethodologicaldivergencesbetweenthelinguistic
andphilosophicalapproaches,thedierencesstemmingprimarilyfromdierent
goalsofresearchinthetwofields.
MarcinWągieldiscussesissuesrelatedtothesemanticinterpretationofthe
plural.Thepaperreviewstwoalternativeapproachestotheproblem,namely
theinclusiveandexclusiveinterpretationoftheplural,andrecallsarguments
againsttheinclusiveapproach.Furthermore,theauthorproposesthattheunified
semanticsofpairdevelopedinthisstudysupportstheexclusiveaccount.The
analysisaccountsforthesupposedlyheterogeneousbehaviorofpairinphrasesin
whichitcombineswithregularpluralnounsand,ontheotherhand,withpluralia
tantum.Thepuzzleconcernsdierentcardinalityofdenotedobjects.Wągiel
positsthatthedenotationofregularcountnounsincludesonlysumsofindividuals,
whereaspluraliatantumdenotecompletesemi-lattices.Ineachcase,pairselects
aminimalelementofthedenotationofanoun,i.e.eitherasumconsistingoftwo
individualsoranatom,andturnsitintoagroupwhichcanbefurthercounted.In
hisinvestigationthecontributoremphasizesthesignificanceofcross-linguistic
semanticbehaviorofthemeasurewordpair.
JanWiślickiexaminesthequestionwhetherthestandardChomskyanMin-
imalistframeworkisinapositiontogeneratequotationalexpressions.Assuming
thecrucialelementsoftheMinimalistarchitecture,thatisthePhaseImpenetra-
bilityCondition(PIC)andtheNo-TamperingCondition(NTC)basedderivation
byphases,Wiślickishowsthatthebehaviourofquotationposesseriousproblems
forthecurrentMinimalistProgram.Thetheoryofphasesdoesnotseemtobe
sufcientlyfine-grainedinordertoaccountforawidevarietyofpuzzlingfeatures
observedforquotationalexpression.Itisarguedthattheeectsthatcanhardlybe
explainedwithinthestandardMinimalismnaturallyfollowfromthelayeredtop-
downderivationproposedbyZwart.
