thesameaccentinventoryisappliedineithercase.
Autosegmental-Metricaltheoryhasgivenrisetoaspecifictranscription
systemcalledToBI(ToneandBreakIndices)(Silvermanetal.1992),where
theprosodicstructureandintonationpatternofaphraseisdescribedbymeans
ofH(high)andL(low)tonesandtheircombinations,andbreakindices
referringtothedegreeofcohesivenessbetweenwords.ToBIhasbecome
astandardtoolfordescribingtheprosodyofEnglish,butalsoawidevarietyof
otherlanguages(e.g.Jun2005),whichoftenrequireGnational”modifications
ofthesystem.
Summingupthetworelevantapproaches,wereceiveapossibleinventory
ofanumberofspeechunitscapableofformingamultilevelhierarchy.
Thehierarchicstructureofutterancesreferstotherelativelyindependent
andGcomplete”fundamentalunitofintonationalphrase,atthelevelof
tone/sense/intonationgroup/unit.IfanIPconsistsofmorethanone
intermediatephrase(BeckmanandPierrehumbert1986),thenthetonegroup
correspondswiththelatterunit.
1.1.2Relationsbetweentheword(lexicalorfunctional)
andthefoot
Basically,theintonationalphraseissegmentedintofeetintheBritishtradition
andintowordsintheToBIsystem.However,authorsdifferintheirtreatmentof
thetwodomains.Theroleofwordsinprosodicpatternsdependsontheir
category.Thedistinctionbetweenlexicalandfunctionalcategories(orcontent
andfunctionwords)ishighlysignificantforthesyntacticpropertiesof
sentences(e.g.Jackendoff1977,Chomsky1986),and,naturally,thetwo
categoriesalsodisplaydifferentphonologicalproperties(e.g.Sweet1891,Jones
1964,Gimson1962,Selkirk1972,1984,1986,1999;NesporandVogel19861
seeSelkirk1995aforareview).
Thephonologicaldifferencesspringfromthefactthatfunctionwordsin
EnglishmayappearinstresslessGweak”forms,whilecontentwordsalways
haveatleastonestressed,unreducedsyllable.Reducedfunctionwordsare
accommodatedintheprosodicstructureindifferentways.Acontentwordmay
beisomorphicwithasyllable(e.g.Gcat”)oritmayfunctionasasinglefoot,
(e.g.Ghonest”),butitmayalsoconsistofseveralwithin-wordfeet(Turkand
White1999),e.g.Ganticipation.”Aweakformofafunctionwordbearsno
stressthatcouldformafoot,soitiscombinedwithacontentword(asinGtalk
tohim”)toformacross-wordfoot(White2002),stressfoot(KimandCole
2005),prosodicword(e.g.Selkirk1978),orcliticgroup(cf.TurkandWhite
1999:171).
