(Crystal1969,O’ConnorandArnold1961)andtheaccentedsyllables
precedingthenucleusareknownasprenuclearaccents(Cruttenden1997).
Unaccentedsyllablesprecedingtheheadarecalledprehead(Crystal1969,
Halliday1970,O’ConnorandArnold1973,Cruttenden1997).Finally,
thenucleusisfollowedbyanoptionaltail(O’ConnorandArnold1961),also
callednucleartailbyCrystal(1969).Thetail,liketheprehead,consistsof
unaccentedsyllablesalone.Thedescribedpartsofthetoneunitarefurther
dividedintofeet.Abercrombie(1967)definesthefootasatoneunit
constituentcomprisingastressedsyllableandthefollowingunstressedonesup
tothenextstressedsyllable.Accordingtothisview,awordboundarydoesnot
automaticallyterminatethefoot,whichcanthusbecomeaunitlargerthan
theword(across-wordfoot1cf.White2002).
Asimilarmodelofprosodicstructure,proposedbyJassem(1952),
distinguishesnarrowrhythmunits(NRUs),which,combinedwithanacruses,
constitutetotalrhythmunitsinsteadofthefeet.Thenarrowrhythmunitisalso
initiatedbyastressedsyllablebut,incontrasttothefoot,itonlyincludes
syllableswithinthesamelexicalunit,whichactuallyimpliesaclaimthatword
boundariesinconnectedspeechmayinfluencetheprosody.Forinstance,
thephrasesGsummerdresses”andGsomeaddresses”wouldreceiveidentical
descriptioninAbercrombie’sapproach,whereasaccordingtoJassem,thefirst
syllableofGaddresses”formsananacrusis,aconstituentoutsidethenarrow
rhythmunit(cf.BouzonandHirst2004,HirstandBouzon2005).1
AlthoughtheBritishSchoolmodelofprosodicstructureisstillpopular,
alotofrecentresearchisbasedontheAutosegmental-Metrical(AM)
approach,proposedbyPierrehumbert(1980)anddevelopedbyBeckmanand
Pierrehumbert(1986)andLadd(1986,1996).TheAMtheorydiffersfrom
theBritishSchoolnotonlyintheapproachtotonesasdiscreteunits,orpitch
targets(HorL)ratherthancontours,butalsointheapproachtophrasing,
whichhasbeenbasedonthestudiesbySelkirk(1980)andNesporandVogel
(1986).
These
researchers
postulated
a
hierarchy
of
prosodic
units,
distinguishingtwobasiclevelsofphrasing,viz.thefullintonationalphrase(IP)
andtheintermediatephrase(ip).Thelatterisfurtherdividedintoprosodic
words(orcliticgroups)andfeet(cf.TurkandWhite1999).Theprosodic
domains,exceptforthelowestconstituents,aremadeupofatleastone
constitutentofimmediatelylowerlevel(Selkirk1978,1995b,NesporandVogel
1986,Hayes1989).Theslightdifferencesbetweenindividualauthorsare
presentedinTable1.1.
