SeriouspoliticalcrisesobservedintheArabworldsince2011haveresulted
intheoverthrowoforattacksonseveraldictatorships,butitisinteresting
tonotethatdeepcrisesofstatestructureswereobservedintheArab
republics,whilethemonarchiesretainedpoliticalandsocialstability.The
authorobservesthatthisishardlyacoincidence,asthemonarchsrelyon
thetraditionallegitimacyofpower,withthereigningdynastiesdepending
eitherontheirdescentfromProphetMuhammadorontheircontributionto
therenewalofIslam.Theauthorityofthesemonarchsisclosetoabsolute,
eveninJordan,wheremanyEuropeanarrangementshavebeenadopted
(forexample,aconstitution,parliament,andelections).Thistextexamines
severaldecadesinJordan’sdevelopment,focusingonthecrisesofauthority
in1951,1956-1957,1967-1970and1989-1991.Intimesofcrisis,the
Hashemitesdrawontheirprerogativesasabsoluterulers,andontheconcept
oftherulerinIslamictradition,soJordan’shistorymaybepresentedasan
exampleofthestabilisingroleofmonarchiesintheArabworld.

America(includingArgentina,Bolivia,Brazil,Cuba,Peru,andVenezuela)
whichintheauthor’sopiniondemonstratethattheregionhasenteredanew
phaseofpoliticaltransition.Theauthorsuggeststhatthe“goldenage”of
theLatinAmericanlefthascometoanend,firstandforemostduetothe
completionofthecommodities’super-cycleandrisingpublicdisillusionwith
theperformanceofleft-wingleaders.Heconcludes,however,thatthisneed
nottranslateintoaninevitable“turntotheright,”norsignalabeginning
ofthelong-awaitedinter-Americanrapprochement,especiallygiventhatthe
presidencyofDonaldTrumpintheUnitedStates,coupledwithmounting
politicaltensionsandeconomicdifficultiesathome,mayforceLatinAmerica
toconfrontnewchallenges.
