Theprocessofnation-buildingstartedshortlyaftercommunismcollapsed,
butthedemocraticchangescalledtheHRevolutionofDignity”inMaidan
2013madeitmoreintensive.Theneedforrealindependenceandthe
prospectofconnectingwiththeEuropeanCommunityraisedawarenessof
newidentity.Adynamicnation-buildingprocesshasinfluencedUkrainian
societytointegratewithcommonvaluesandpivotalpoliticalideas.Thestudy
assumedthat:a)thedemocraticrevolution,whichbeganin2013onMaidan,
wasaresultofthegrowthofpoliticalconsciousnessandnationalidentity;
b)politicalchangeswereaccompaniedbyanintensificationoftheprocess
ofnation-building;andc)despitesignificantsocialmobilisation,thereare
someobstaclesthatimpedetheformationofacivicnationinUkraine.They
areresultsofthedomesticfactors(theweaknessofinstitutionsandcivic
organisations)andexternalelements(thewarwithRussia).Itisclearthat
Euromaidanraisedtheissueofnationalpoliticalunity,despitetheethnic,
linguisticandreligiousbases.Ahighlevelofinclusivenessandtolerance
towardsHothers”ensurescontinuingintegrationofminoritiesintoUkrainian
society.However,thekeyproblemshinderingnationaldevelopmentremain
unsolved.

SovereigntyintheEuropeanUnionisrestrictedbyEUlawandpolicies.The
weakestandperipheralstateshavetheleastimpactontheshapeofthislaw
andpoliciesandhencearemostconstrainedthereby.Inthecaseofthelargest
statessovereigntyisreinforced.Countrieswiththegreatestinfluenceonthe
waytheUnionfunctionsareabletouseitsinstrumentstoimplementgoals
thatresultfromtheirnationaldemocraticprocesses,whichmeansthatthe
sovereigntyofthemostpowerfulstatesisenhancedattheexpenseofthoseon
theperiphery.Thekeytoexplainthisphenomenonistheasymmetryofpower
intheEUamongtheMemberStates.Inaway,thesmallerstates,which
areweakereconomicallyandpolitically,tradetheirnationalsovereignty
foreconomicbenefitsorforastrongersenseofstabilityandsecurity.At
thesametime,thecrisesthataffectEuropeshowthatthesaidbenefitsfrom
limitingsovereigntyarenotdurable,astheyhaveresultedinanumberof
economic,socialandpoliticalproblems,underminingbothstabilityanda
senseofsecurity.

diminishthethreatofIslamicStateterrorismintheWest,extensiveresearch
intothecharacteristicsofbothjihadistforeignfighters(JFF)andjihadist
terrorists(JT)isconducted.Furthermore,thepaperfocusesonthehighly
specificcaseofMolenbeek-Saint-Jean,aBrusselsmunicipalityregardedas
ahotbedofterrorism.Althoughthenumberofstudiesprofilingpost-Arab
Springjihadistsislimited,somenoteworthyconclusionscanbedrawn.
