destinationworldwide.Undoubtedly,theTreatyofLisbonisaperfectopportunity
tostrengthencompetivenessoftheEuropeantourismsectorwhich,inturn,will
contributetotherealizationofthenewEurope2020Strategy.
Tourismisplayingasignificantroleinthedevelopmentofmanyregions,be-
inganessentialsourceofincomesandemploymentfortheirinhabitants.Whatis
more,forsomeofthemitisnecessaryasitisanessentialfactorwithincreasing
theircompetiveness.Tus,alltheactivitiesresultingfromtheEuropeantourism
policylargelyinfluencethedevelopmentofmanyregionsasthetourismsector
determinesapro-developmentimpulseforthedevelopmentofothersectorsof
theregionaleconomy.However,Europeantourismpolicyrequiresadjustmentto
thespecificconditionsofparticularEuropeancountriesandregions.Teprereq-
uisitewasthebasisofthestudiestakenupbytheauthorsofthework.Temain
goalofthestudywastodefinemajorstrategicdirectionsoftourismdevelopment
inEuropebasingtheresearchontwoneighbourhoodcountriesoftheEuropean
Union,i.e.PolandandSlovakia.
Bothcountriesrepresentsimilarlegalconditionings.BothinPolandandin
Slovakiathereisnoframeworkactwhichwouldbethebasisforthecomplexsup-
portforthedevelopmentofthetourismsector.InPolandthereisalegalacton
tourismservices.It,however,ismoreofasectornature,anddoesnotcoverevery
issuethatallowsforacomplexdevelopmentofthetourismsector.Inbothcountries
theinstitutionalsystemwhichisresponsiblefortourismsupportoperatesinthree
levels(national,regionalorlocal),anditissupportedbythedevelopingsectorof
non-governmentalorganizations.AsforPoland,itseemstobeslightlymoredevel-
opedowingtotheactivitiesofsuchorganizationsasPolishTourismOrganizations,
RegionalTourismOrganizationsandLocalTourismOrganizations.InSlovakia,
thedivisionofcompetenciesinsupportingthetourismsectorisnotfullyregulated.
Tourismentitiesarequitefrequentlyfunctioninginanuncoordinatedwaysothat
ithindersthedevelopmentofthesector.Telackofcooperationcausesalackof
coherentandsystematicmarketingactivitiesbetweenthelocalandregionalenti-
ties.BothPolandandSlovakiashouldpreparethenationalstrategiesfortourism
developmentwiththetimehorizonof2020.Strategicdocumentsshouldalsobe
preparedandappliedintheregion.
Micro,smallandmedium-sizedenterprises(SMEs)areadominantgroupof
enterprisesinbothcountries.Regardingthefinancialmeansinbothoftheanalyzed
countries,Polandhasbetterpossibilitiesoffinancingtouristprojects.Temeans
forprojectrealizationinSlovakiaareeighttimesless,andaredistributedmainly
thoughthenationalprograms.
Inviewofthevariedconditionsandbasesofstrategicdirectionsoftourism
developmentinthebothcountries,thedińerentiatedbutthemostimportant
