Introduction
Thethemeofthisvolumeis“tradition”versus“reception”inclassicalstud-
ies.Itisavolumeconceivedoutoftheneedtodelineatethedifferencebetween
thosetermsfrequentlyandofteninterchangeablyused.Theauthorsattemptedto
capturethetwoideas“inaction,”astheyemergeinhistory,asawayofimbuing
theculturalmodelsofdiversepeopleswithGreco-Romanstyleandinspiration.
Thecontributorstothepresentvolumedidnotlimittheirresearchtopractices
andambitionsofelites,but,asinthecaseofPawełMadejskiin“Latininthe
ContemporaryPolish‘StreetEpigraphy’,”theyliterallychasedpavementslooking
forevidenceofLatinbeingabsorbedanddigestedbythelowestculturalstrata.
Madejskifindsgraffiti,tatoos,writtensignsonthestreets,inwhichallusionto
classicallanguages,oftenunintentionallydistortedortravestied,formstheheart
